Darwin and Murphy share an optimism that neither engineering or nature seem to support. While Darwin would have us believe that lower organisms evolve, overtime, to higher forms through the process of natural selection this is demonstrably not always the case.
Take the Sabre Tooth Tiger, for example, long extinct and possibly not due to any inadequacy as a hunter. Instead, the flaw in its genes was its exceptional adaptions for hunting large mammals. It was so good at that, it killed off all its prey and was left with nothing to eat.
